Science Companion

I Wonder: notice, ask questions, state problems

I Think: consider, gather information, predict

I Try: experiment, model, test ideas, repeat

  I Observe: watch, examine, measure

I Record: record data, organize, describe, classify,  graph, draw

I Discover: look for patterns, reflect, interpret, conclude, communicate

Research tells us that students learn best when they are more involved in the process of learning. This idea extends beyond just understanding content. The process of science, of "doing science", is called inquiry based learning. It is important that any good science program  maintain a balance between process and content.

We are excited to share with you the new science program that is being adopted by the Central Bucks School District, Science Companion. This adoption will take place during the 2008-2009 school year. This program provides a wonderful balance between science content and science process.

Science Companion is designed to meet state and national science education standards, as well as best practices for science education. This program will also support our students as they demonstrate an understanding of science content and processes on the PSSA.

The developers of the Everyday Mathematics series created Science Companion. You will find many similarities in the layout, resources, and teacher/student support in its pages.

Each Unit features:  ExploraGear Kit, Teacher Lesson Manual, Teacher Masters, Assessment Book, Visual Pack (overhead transparencies), Student Notebooks, and more. Click for sample pictures of kits and print materials. Some units also have a student reference book. The purpose of this web site is to give teachers a brief overview of the program in each of the grade levels. Please select the grade level that you are interested in by clicking  below. Professional development will be regular and ongoing for Science Companion, along with internet and intranet support. Look for summer workshops in our online staff development catalog beginning in the summer of 2008.

Science Companion was developed so that the units can be completed with a commitment of two, 45-minute lessons per week for science instruction.
